A Wicked Evening At Le Studio

Emily Fernstrom, Socal.com Writer

If you combine Cirque Du Soleil with the hit musical “Wicked” and add some extremely talented young ladies, you will have the experience of watching Le Studio’s newest show entitled “A Wicked Evening”. .

Having seen the original musical performed on Broadway, I had a slight idea about what the performance would be like, but I have to say that it was far more than I ever could have expected. Although a clarification is important, this is not a smaller or side production of Wicked, this is rather "an aerial-vocal cabaret style show called "A Wicked Evening" - with some of the songs from the show "Wicked".

Talking about aerial routines, they were breathtaking as girls thirteen and under twisted and balanced on ropes at least ten feet in the air! What was especially beautiful about the performance was that each girl had the opportunity to showcase her own skills and abilities with both the aerial routines as well as the musical numbers.

On first entering the studio I was amazed to see the girls wrapped like butterflies in cocoons hanging from the ceiling until they twisted their way out of them for the opening sequence. The show was a true testament to the time, determination, passion, and dedication that these young ladies have devoted to their training in order to do such incredible stunts at such young ages.

I believe the director, and fellow performer, Nathalie Gaulthier sets a great example of what can be achieved through continuous practice in aerials when she performed with Hope Hall towards the end of the show and wowed the entire room with their gravity-defying routine. A true testament to what the human body can achieve!

Besides the astounding aerial routines, the pure vocal talent was enough to make the night significant itself. There were plenty of moments in the show where I could not hear a difference in vocals between these girls and the actual Broadway singers. I have a definite feeling that we will all be seeing more than a few of these young ladies on Broadway one day.

Wanna hang out with the heavy hitters from Cirque du Soleil? Stefan Haves physical comedy workshop at Gaulthier Artists Le Studio in Santa Monica might be one of your few chances.

OK, you were scared of clowns as a kid. Pooey. What’s wrong with you? I must admit, I was myself afraid of clowns as a kid, especially because I didn’t find them funny. Growing up, turns out, has a few advantages: one for example, you don’t find clowns scary and god forbid, if they’re good, you can find them even funny. You know of course, that thanks to innovators like Cirque Du Soleil, circus crafts took a huge leap forward and now, the circus is not anymore what it used to be: thank God.So as of late, physical comedy is just one more tool for the avant-garde performer, trying to get an edge. But perhaps you’re wondering:how can you benefit as an actor or performer from the histrionic skills of a clown? No, wait, let me re-phrase that:How can you benefit as an actor or performer from the histrionic skills of the- world-renowned, Teatro Zinzanni and Cirque Du Soleil master clown, Stefan Haves? Fiiiiu… you see how much longer of a line I had to write just to fit all that in? And I’m just mentioning a couple of things in Stefan’s resume, really.Although the answer should be obvious, I’ll let you take his personal class and find out. You can send me the thank you email to Sergio@socal.com
